Torgrim Titlestad (born June 30, 1947) is a prominent Norwegian historian, professor, and author, best known for his expertise on the Viking Age and early Norwegian history. He holds a Ph.D. and is an emeritus professor at the University of Stavanger. Over his career, he has authored numerous works that highlight his deep engagement with the Viking period and its sagas, such as Viking Legacy and Flatøybok. He has been instrumental in translating and making key medieval texts, like the works of Tormod Torfæus, accessible to modern audiences.
In recognition of his contributions to preserving and promoting Norse history, Titlestad was awarded the Saga Prize in 2016 and was knighted with the Order of the Falcon by Iceland in 2017. His efforts in making sagas more accessible and promoting a re-evaluation of their historical accuracy have been widely acclaimed, particularly his advocacy for the "constructive saga criticism" approach, which views sagas as reliable historical sources

LISTEN TO EXCERPTS FROM “VIKING LEGACY”
“The Viking Legacy is one of the most important elements in the cultural heritage of the world…”
Through the saga depictions of Norwegian political struggles, this book will describe in detail how democratic elements developed from the 9th to the 11th centuries – in constant tension with authoritarian kings and impulses. Just as ancient Greece is the key to understanding the origins of democracy in the world, Norway and Iceland are the key to appreciating the further development of democracy in history.
